My writing: Stalemate

Stalemate is a story about Superheroes. Not about the philosophy of them, though it has those elements. Not about their nature as a force in popular culture, though it has those elements. No, Stalemate is a story about Superheroes. Doing superheroic things, fighting supervillains and cataclysmic threats. And, it's written by a lifelong lover of the genre.

Maybe atypical of most superhero stories, my characters are unapologetically diverse and funny and I work hard to respectfully represent interesting people I don't often find in mainstream published material. I also write their dialogue and actions as I feel appropriate to their characters and the story so Stalemate won't likely be appropriate for children or anyone squeamish about liberal use of F-bombs. If you are okay with all that, I hope you'll read on and that you enjoy Stalemate!

Welcome to Stalemate. Read on to understand how it all began and to meet our main characters.

Origins

In this exciting issue, the new recruits are finding their way as super-heroes, we meet the Guardians and James has a pretty good day.

Issue 2- Time 4 Title Puns

James leaned on the door frame, as the second person he had ever met, the hero known as Hiryu, shouldered his bag and replied, “Yeah. After what happened with that mind control guy...something felt lacking. I need to understand the power that’s been granted to me more completely. Also, my cousin is still trying to murder me for it, so that’s an issue.”

Issue 4-Infinity is Surprisingly Limited

He was sure that the connecting pieces were all there. There were supervillains who appeared out of nowhere but acted like they’d been in the business for years, before dying of catastrophic seizures. And, they all had chips in their necks marked with the name of the man who had killed his adopted son.

Issue 6-Matriarchal Malady

“TREMBLE, HEROES! I, Occulonius, have created the ultimate warrior; PANOPTES! THE ALL-SEEING!” The man in the sea-foam green jumpsuit covered in blinking eyes, shouted out. He stood upon a floating platform with hand rails, and stroked the part of his beard one could see from under his incredibly silly, eye-themed helmet.

Issue 8-Taking a Break from Action

Origin stories of some characters, and random little snippets of other adventures.

Beginnings and Middle-#1

In this exciting issue, James Stalemate, the newly renowned Hammer-Based Hero is resting in the hospital, with more than a few shattered bones, after being beaten near to death by two beefy Russians at the behest of MR.BONES, a skeleton in a suit who speaks in all caps...

Issue 1- The team doesn't even have a name yet, does it?

Bart Rogers had gone by a lot of names during his life. He was the “Wonder of the West” when he was younger. He told people his name was Jack “Bullseye” Malone when he was a teen. He made a point of being the “Masked Rider” at around twenty-two. But then it had all gone to hell....

Issue 3-A Wicked Thing, This Way Comes

“This is a sour way to die.” That was a line from his favorite comic book ever, the last issue of Doc Powers Magazine. Before the guy got pulled to the real world from another universe.

Issue 5-Sour Ways

In the wreckage of MOTHER’s rocket platform, a single Soldier of Tomorrow stood. The display it had for a face flickered and a single glowing eye opened. With a slow turn of its head, it observed the wreckage of a plane and rocket, the crumpled remains of a woman, and what used to be the tower in which MOTHER was storing herself. Leaning down, the soldier reached one hand into the pile of the scattered parts and found what it was looking for; a small box, inscribed with alien runes.

Issue 7-What Lurks in the Mind

“That’s it, buddy, keep it steady”, Technobabble said as they ducked under the slab of what used to

be a roof. They activated as many systems as they had to find survivors, thankful that Panoptes did not struggle with the weight of the roof he held up. The big lug was reliable, if anything.

“Hello?” Technobabble called out though they knew it was probably useless. There wasn’t likely to be anyone there who wasn’t dead or dying.

Stalemate Issue 10: Guardians Beta

"When the world is young, there are always the Four. In these formative years, it is not just the planet itself that is forming. The field of magic, the beginnings of the biosphere, the alignment with other concurrent universes in its placement...these things are also being determined. At a nexus point, on these worlds, the Four are forming. They are the Fluid, The Solid, The Gas, the Energy. On most worlds, in most universes, these remain without form. Without minds. Without Definition. Earth was not that sort of world.

They formed, but they had no names. They had to get those later, they knew."
